Gunungbatu (22/07/2024) – To enhance students’ understanding of the Cartesian coordinate system, KKN TIM II UNDIP students in Gunungbatu Village, Bodeh Sub-district, Pemalang Regency, introduced an innovative and enjoyable learning method at SDN Gunungbatu. Through the Battle Ship game, teachers were taught a new method to teach the coordinate system to their students, while also developing their logical and strategic skills.
Many students find it challenging to grasp the Cartesian coordinate system. Therefore, an engaging learning method is needed to improve their understanding and interest in learning. One effective approach is learning through play, as children are more inclined to enjoy learning while playing rather than being directly given problems and formulas.
One of the KKN TIM II UNDIP students, named Abied Farih Alvian, introduced the Battle Ship game to the teachers at SDN Gunungbatu. With high enthusiasm, the teachers followed each step of the game explained. The game is played by two people in pairs, with each player given two sheets of Cartesian diagrams showing the positions of ships and bombs at different coordinates for each player. The player must guess the opponent’s ship positions, and the player who successfully guesses all the opponent’s ship positions wins. If hit by a bomb, the player loses immediately.
The teachers’ enthusiasm was evident throughout the training. They greatly enjoyed the interactive and competitive learning process. Many teachers were pleased with this new learning method as it provided a different learning experience and is hoped to be applied in classrooms. The KKN team was even encouraged by the teachers at SDN Gunungbatu to directly teach the students.
With the success of this activity, it is hoped that innovative learning methods like this can continue to be developed and implemented in other schools, not only for mathematics but also for other subjects. This method proves that learning can be a fun and effective activity when integrated with educational games.
